Juana Acosta
Juana Acosta graduated in May 2010 with a double major in biology and chemistry and a minor in Forensic Science. She was an active researcher while at CSM working on projects involving tribolium, biofuels, computerized facial reconstruction, thermophilic bacteria and molecular biology. She also participated in a nationwide competition to build a model lunar rover for NASA. She received NASA fellowships and the Distinguished Scholar Award for her research efforts, was a recipient of the James Anderegg Scholarship for excellence in science, and has presented her research at the Nebraska Academy of Science annual conference, Faculty Appreciation Luncheon, Nebraska Division of the International Association for Identification Conference and at CSM’s Scholars Day. Juana also held numerous leadership positions while at CSM: founder and president of Green Team, Executive of Multicultural Association of Students, Campus Activities Board, and Math & Science Club. She was a resident advisor in the residence hall, graduated from the Leadership Launch program and served as Marie Curie tutor. Juana plans to attend Loma Linda University in California to pursue a Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics.

Melina Baeza-Villa
Melina Baeza-Villa will be starting her second year in the fall and plans to attend medical school following graduation to become a pediatrician. She is active in Math & Science Club and Multicultural Association of Students and graduated from the Leadership Launch Program. She graduated from Bryan High school in Omaha where she was on the honor roll all 4 years, completed the Grassroots Leadership Development Program and received Academic Excellence Awards.

Carolyn Behney
Carolyn Behney completed her Associates Degree in Nursing in May, 2009 and is now double majoring in biology and chemistry in order to pursue her dream of conducting biomedical research. Carolyn in currently working with Dr. Oksana Lockridge at UNMC on research involving exposure to organophosphates during jet travel. This opportunity is through the Nebraska INBRE grant. She is also active in Math & Science club and enjoys sharing her love of science with elementary students through demonstrations. She has received a NASA fellowship to develop an Outreach Program with local youth.

Skyler Bentley
Skyler Bentley will be joining us in the fall of 2010 to pursue her dream of becoming a pediatric Physician’s Assistant. She graduated from Roncalli Catholic High School in Omaha in May, 2010 and received the Christian Service Award and the Erica Beacom Memorial Scholarship.

Emali Chaidez
Emali Chaidez plans to graduate in May, 2011 with a double major in biology and chemistry. She then plans to apply to medical school. Emali has participated in research projects on membrane proteins and antibiotic resistant bacteria. She has also served as a Marie Curie tutor, officer in Math and Science Club, Students Against Violence and Green Team. She has received the Coreen Barba Memorial Scholarship for excellence in science. She served as an INBRE scholar and has presented her research at the annual INBRE conference. Emali has presented her research at the annual Nebraska INBRE conference.

Chelsea Dean
Chelsea Dean plans to graduate in May, 2011 with a double major in biology and chemistry and a minor in Spanish. She then plans to apply to medical school. Chelsea is an INBRE scholar and has received a NASA fellowship for her research efforts. She has presented her research at the Nebraska Academy of Science annual meeting, the Nebraska INBRE annual conference and recently returned from a trip to New Orleans where she presented a poster on her research into the effects of hog dust on airway epithelial cells. Chelsea has taken on numerous leadership roles on campus, graduated from the Leadership Launch program and served as a Marie Curie tutor. She has served as an officer of Math and Science Club, Green Team, and Students Against Violence, a student organization that she founded. She is from Bellevue, Nebraska and is a black belt in martial arts.

Alexandra Egentowich
Alexandra Egentowich will be starting her second year in the fall of 2010. She is a member of the CSM swim team, which keeps her quite busy, and is active in Math and Science Club. Alex graduated from Plattsmouth High School in Plattsmouth, Nebraska in May 2009 where she received the American Legion Certificate of Appreciation and the Society of Women Engineers Certificate of Merit.

Maryann Forsell
Maryann Forsell will be joining us in the fall of 2010. She graduated from Norfolk Catholic High School in Norfolk, Nebraska in May, 2010 where she was very active in sports, speech, band, school newspaper, volunteer activities and leadership roles. She plans to pursue a career in dentistry.

Lindsey Glock
Lindsey Glock plans to graduate in May, 2011 with a double major in biology and chemistry. She has been active in Math and Science Club and the Forensic Science Student Initiative. She presented her research project in forensic odontology at a national forensic meeting in Denver, CO. Lindsey received a NASA fellowship for this project. She is currently participating in an internship at a state park in western Nebraska. She is from Rising City, Nebraska and feels that her greatest accomplishment is placing 2nd at dance nationals.

Ischel Gonzalez-Kelso
Ischel Gonzalez-Kelso will be joining us the fall of 2010. She graduated from Omaha South High Magnet where she was active in sports, was a class officer and a member of National Honor Society. She plans to major in chemistry and then pursue a career in the pharmaceutical research.

Katie James
Katie James will be starting her second year at CSM in the fall of 2010. She has been active in Math and Science Club and enjoys sharing her love of science with elementary students by doing demonstrations. Katie graduated from Mercy High School in Omaha, NE in May 2009 where she was a member of National Honor Society, took first place in AMC math competition, published poems and earned service awards. Katie plans to enter veterinary school following graduation.

Samantha Marquez
Samantha Marquez plans to graduate in May, 2011 with a degree in biology. She then plans to apply to medical school. Sam has served as a Marie Curie tutor and been active in research. She has presented her research at the Nebraska Academy of Science annual meeting and received a NASA fellowship for her efforts. She is active in Math and Science Club and Students Against Violence and has served as an officer in both. Sam is from El Centro, CA and enjoys returning home for the summer and semester breaks.

Jami Mitchell
Jami Mitchell graduated in May, 2010 and is pursuing a graduate degree in chemistry at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. While at CSM Jami was active in Math and Science club, serving as an officer, and she also served as a Marie Curie tutor. She presented her research into degradation of lipids during cooking at the national American Chemical Society meeting in San Francisco, CA as well as at the Nebraska Academy of Science meeting and at CSM’s Scholar’s Day. She also received a NASA fellowship for her research efforts.

Alicia Newsome
Alicia Newsome plans to graduate in May, 2012 with a major in biology. She is an INBRE scholar and is working on telomerase research at UNMC during the summer. Alicia is active in Math and Science club, serving as an officer. She enjoys doing science demonstrations for elementary students and hopes to develop some new demonstrations during the coming year. She served as the biology coordinator for Science Day, a day of hands on science activities for local high school students.

Yvette Ramirez Garcia
Yvette Ramirez Garcia graduated from Harry A. Burke High School in Omaha, NE in May, 2008. She is majoring in chemistry and plans to go to pharmacy school after graduation. Yvette has served as an officer in Math and Science Club, is on Student Senate and is active in an active leader in the Hispanic community.

Jackie Swanger
Jackie Swanger graduated from Millard South High School in Millard, Nebraska. She plans to graduate in May, 2012 and then attend veterinary school. Jackie keeps herself busy by playing goalie for the CSM soccer team, being active in Math and Science Club and presenting science demonstrations to elementary students. She served as the chemistry coordinator for Science Day, a day of hands on science activities for local high school students and is a graduate of the Leadership Launch Program.

Diana Torres
Diana Torres is a biology and chemistry double major planning to graduate in May, 2012. After graduation she plans to attend medical school to become a pediatrician. While at CSM she has been active in Math and Science Club, Green Team, Students Against Violence, Phi Beta Lambda and Golden ‘S’. Diana feels that her greatest accomplishment was winning a leadership award.
