As a high school student, Samantha Doughty worked in a toy store with her mother when she realized she wanted to be a teacher.
“Seeing the kids’ faces light up made me light up,” she said. “I got so excited to see them. Being with kids makes me so happy.”
The Arlington High School graduate started her educational journey at an area community college before transferring to College of Saint Mary at her sister’s recommendation. Her sister graduated from CSM’s occupational therapy program.
“Because of that, I wanted to tour here,” Samantha said. “I also liked being close to home and close to my family. She loved it here. I came here, and I fell in love with it.”
Samantha, a senior who will graduate in May 2025, is majoring in elementary education. She added a special education minor after taking a special education course.
“The class broadened my perspective of how kids are individual and how you need equality,” she said.
Samantha has received experience in second-, third- and fourth-grade classrooms at area schools in the Papillion and Millard districts. She has watched current teachers build relationships with their students and help them improve.
“Observing the experiences helps me better understand what I need to do as a teacher,” she said.
Samantha said her professors have offered real-life examples she can draw on.
“Having their experience has helped me realize all the little things I need to focus on, too,” she said.
Following graduation, Samantha hopes to teach second grade in the Omaha area. “I do really like the Omaha atmosphere compared to a small town,” she said.
In addition to her studies, Samantha is a member of the Flames golf team.
