Alumni Spotlight
College of Saint Mary was the “perfect” college experience for Janice Zach Townsend ’79. The Papillion, Neb., resident, earned her degree in early childhood education with Montessori training.
“I was surrounded by great students, teachers and staff and an atmosphere that really helped me grow as an individual and as a leader,” she said. “I think a small campus was a good fit for me. From the very beginning, I made many connections with many students from various grade levels and even now I am still in contact with many of my CSM friends. I think those friendships were the most important part of my CSM experience.”
During her college experience, Janice was involved in student government.
“In each of my roles, I gained confidence and was challenged beyond my comfort level,” she said. “Whether it was delivering a speech or helping with a project, I just learned to handle things as they came.”
After graduation, Janice was a directress for a Montessori Educational Center. She later served as a teacher at St. Gerald School before becoming a library and media specialist for St. Columbkille School in Papillion. Janice earned her master’s degree in educational media from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1998.
“I have always had a special allegiance to CSM, and I have been proud to let others know that it is my alma mater,” Janice said.
Janice was one of nine alumnae honored with the Alumni Achievement Award during Homecoming on Sept. 21.
