CSM to Host Science Workshops for Elementary Teachers

Monday, July 8, 2024

OMAHA, Neb. – College of Saint Mary (CSM) is proud to announce a unique opportunity for elementary school teachers to improve their science background, teaching and engagement of students through a series of workshops.

The workshops, which include physics and engineering, will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. one Saturday a month from October through April 2025. A $60 fee covers the cost of lunch and holds a seat. The application deadline is Sept. 20 or until filled.

The workshop is open to men and women educators at any point in their career looking to add new skills and knowledge. Participants will work directly with College of Saint Mary education and science faculty to develop hands-on activities that can be delivered in their classrooms.

“These workshops provide a wealth of information and activities designed to boost teachers’ confidence in the classroom,” explained Amanda Roe, PhD, associate professor of biology, who coordinates the workshops. “By participating, teachers will not only enhance their own knowledge but also learn innovative ways to engage their students, ultimately fostering a love of science from an early age.”

Participants receive a $250 stipend for classroom science teaching supplies. They will also receive two graduate-level education credits for free. Preference is given to schools that send two teachers.

The workshops are made possible by generous gifts from the Claire M. Hubbard Foundation and NASA Nebraska Space Grant.
