The Medical Interpreting Certificate

This program provides professional training to bilingual speakers (English + Spanish or any other language) who seek training in interpretation techniques, situation-specific terminology, and industry ethics. It is designed as a series of interconnected modules (4 courses / 12 credits) that cover different aspects and levels of Medical Interpreting.

All courses are taught online (asynchronous learning), in English, and are non-language specific. Students who complete the program will have taken the minimum forty contact hours of training included among the requisites for taking the certification exam of the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters.

The courses offered include and are as follows (subject to the number of enrollment):

MDI 100: Foundations of Interpreting (3 credits)
Offered in the Fall & Spring semesters.

MDI 110: Medical Interpreting I: Musculoskeletal, Cardio, Digestive, & other Systems​ (3 credits)
Offered in the Spring semester.

MDI 120: Medical Interpreting II: Reproductive, Respiratory, & other Systems (3 credits)
Offered in the Fall semester.

MDI 130: Medical Terminology (3 credits)
Offered in the Fall & Spring semesters.

*It is not necessary to follow a sequence but is recommended. MDI 100 and MDI 130 are the basic courses.

CSM students and community members are eligible to enroll in this program. For full-time CSM students, the tuition for Medical Interpreting courses is included in the full-time tuition plan.

Note: There is no financial aid or scholarships available for this certificate.

How to Register

You can register by following the steps below:

  1. Fill out the PDF form
  2. Return the form to the Registrar’s Office
  3. Registrar’s Office will send a copy of your registration to your email
  4. You will then receive a CSM login and password
  5. The Express Center will send you a statement or you can contact them to make pay arrangements
